Live Recording: Premiere by Wanying Lin at St. Nikolaikirche, Berlin (19.06.2026) Program Note This piece explores the structuring of pitches based on a symmetry akin to combination tones and ring modulation. Through this generative process, the interference between two frequencies projects a third, higher tone above (by summation), and a fourth, lower tone below (by subtraction). This vertical mirroring meets my reverie on the water’s surface, where to look deep into the water is, at the same time, to look at the sky. Following Nuvens-ilhas (2022) (Clouds-islands), the pair Lodo-névoa (Mud-mist) unfolds this image through differentiation. Focusing both on this acoustic effect and on the materiality of these images, the piece invites an attention to texture, tracking the shifts in sonic quality as complex sounds become simpler, and vice versa.
